Understanding the Church(8): The Purpose, Practice, and Product of Discipline – Part 1

Passage: Matthew 18:12-20; Galatians 6:1-2
Service Type:
  • A proposition.
    1. Church discipline has largely been neglected.
      1. By a failure to develop cultures of discipleship
      2. By neglecting the practice of both formal and visible discipline.
    2. This neglect has led to an incorrigible and uncorrectable church culture (cf. 1 Corinthians 5:6).
      1. Divorce rates and cohabitation.
      2. General immorality.
      3. Doctrinal impurity.
    3. This neglect has contributed to impotency both in terms of evangelism and broader cultural influence.
    4. This neglect is due to misunderstandings of both the purpose, practice, and produce of discipline (e.g. “shunning,” “unloving,” “punitive,” “harsh,”, etc.).
